Includes a map and five black and white illustrations. Folkloristic commentary by Alan Dundes; Linguistic index by William Bright. Kroeber gathered nearly 50 Karok tales in 1902 from eight different informants, nearly forty years later Gifford took up the study. From 1939 to 1942 he collected more than 160 new tales. He also secured many Karok formulas for healing, childbirth, hunting luck, etc. These are all published here for the first time. 8vo (9.25 inches tall) 380 pages.
