About This Item

Portland, OR: United Publishing Co., Press of Bushong & Co., 1920. Tall 8vo. [2], 108, [6] leaves. With over 450 photographic illustrations. Limp black pebbled cloth split-pin binder, gilt lettering stamped on front cover, brass split pins at gutter margin (minor shelfwear, some slight rubbing & flexing), still a VG copy. First edition of this scarce photographic survey of the significant men and women in government and business in and around Portland, Oregon at the dawn of the Jazz Age. These include city officials, transportation executives, architects, dentists, engineers, bankers, automobile dealers, ad execs, cigar dealers, printers, engravers, sawmill operators, and much more. The photos were taken at the Bushnell & McAlpin studios, owned at the time by noted Pacific Northwest photographers, Corry A. Bushnell, and Arthur B. McAlpin. Kaufman (1869-1943), worked originally as a merchant in the dry goods industry in Bellingham, WA, and later moved to Portland during World War I, where he became a salesman and advertising promoter. Worldcat locates 4 copies.
