Canterbury: Simmons & Kirkby / T. Fisher, 1779. ~FULL TITLES: The Kentish Traveller's Companion, in a Descriptive View of the Towns, Villages, remarkable Buildings and Antiquities, situated on or near the Road from London to Margate, Dover and Canterbury. With a Correct Map of the Road on a Scale of One Inch to a Mile. Printed and Sold by Simmons and Kirkby, Canterbury; and T. Fisher, Rochester / A Walk In and About the City of Canterbury. With Many Observations Not hitherto described in any other Publication. The Third Edition. By W. Gostling, M. A. A Native of the Place, and Minor Canon of the Cathedral. Canterbury: Printed by Simmons and Kirkby. ~Late 19th- / early 20th-century rebind in dark tan half calf, marbled paper to boards. Brown calf gilt title label of 'Kentish Traveller', preserved from original binding, to spine. Minor wear and scuffing to boards, board edges, and spine. Tiny area of loss to paper on rear board. Page edges browned. Hinges sound. Replacement white endpapers, slightly age-browned and marked. Small owner's bookplate and minor pencil notation to inside front board. Annotations in various old hands, including owner's signature, to title page of 'Kentish Traveller's Companion' (KTC), some slightly obscuring text. Owner's signature to reverse title page of KTC. Owner's signature dated 1783 to title page of 'A Walk'. Both titles pages are annotated 'bought at Canterbury', in the same old hand, with a further note in the same hand to 'A Walk', next to the author's name: 'Publish'd when 80 years old'. KTC is 2nd edn revised; 'A Walk' is 3rd edn. Minor foxing and age-browning to early and late pages, especially to KTC. Minor wear to first few pp. of KTC, with tiny hole to first leaf (obscuring a couple of letters of text), and catch-word neatly clipped from p. 7. Three folding maps to KTC. Two neat professional repairs to first map near folds; second map worn at outer edge. Small tear to upper margin of final page of KTC. Final blank endpage of KTC has been clipped. KTC was published anonymously; ESTC attributes authorship to its Rochester publisher, T. Fisher (ESTC no. T59029). Title page and first leaf of 'A Walk' printed in red & black. 2cm tear to bottom of title page. With 5 in text illustrations and full-page map. Missing the folding plan which should be bound in after p. xiv. William Gostling (bap. 1696, d. 1777), antiquary and topographer, acted as a guide to his native city of Canterbury for many years. When confined to his rooms by age and ill health, he wrote 'A Walk' (first published 1774; ESTC no. T114380), enlisting more mobile friends to ensure the accuracy of his descriptions by personal observation. This third edition contains a new preface, illustrations, and a 'Tour of East Kent' as an appendix. Two complementary books in an attractive binding, both published 1779 and giving a vivid picture of late 18th century Canterbury and Kent. ~Robust packaging. . 2nd / 3rd edition. Hardback. Very Good. iv, 248, (8), iv-xiv, 321, (11)pp. Binding tight, text unmarked.
