Lothrop Publishing Company, Boston, 1901. Integral map frontispiece follows half-title; blank followed by 6pp. integral advertisements at end; vertically fine-ribbed bright reddish-brown cloth, pictorially blocked black, silver, and gilt, lettered silver and gilt, on front cover, pictorially blocked black, silver, and gilt, lettered gilt, on flat spine. Spine very slightly faded and with faint vertical crease; a little very light foxing of end-papers; otherwise a fine copy. With advertisements priced in U.S. dollars, but with ‘Entered at Stationers’ Hall’ on verso of title-page, the same printing having evidently been used for both the American and English issues. The only example of an American book we can remember seeing with the Stationers’ Hall notice, which was uncommon by this date even on English books. According to the English Catalogue of books, this American printing was issued in England at 6s. 6d. in December 1901, an English edition being published by Richards at 6s. in the following March. Hubin, p.2, adding to the information given above an English edition published by Kelly in 1901 (and presumably a piracy).
All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.
