Hardcover. viii, (1), 151 pages; Contents clean and secure in original green cloth binding in edgeworn dustjacket with a couple chips near head of spine; ffep corner cut. Alfred, King of the West Saxons during the turbulent ninth century, freely translated Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy. In the Old English text, Boethius' views on freedom and order are subtly molded to Alfredian proportions to form the foundations of a remarkably coherent philosophical structure, quite at odds with that of Boethius. Payne's book is a perceptive examination and comparison of the two texts. .
