London: Bell, 1887. blue decorated cloth a little worn, front free endpaper torn out, ex-W. H. Smith Subscription Library copy, 291 pages, frontispiece, folding map at end, text block clean and generally fine. Madan, as a missionary on Zanzibar, worked with about a hundred Aftican boys who had been rescued from slave ships by British cruisers and brought to the island. Eventually he invited some of them to write down recollections of their homes and wanderings, and any stories they remembered having heard in their own lands and on their travels. Thirteen boys complied, and this book is the result. Madan translated the stories from Swahili. Scarce (only copy online at time of cataloguing).. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
