Near Fine, slight soiling rear, 1/4" tear and small crease top edge. Original stamp in blue inkon rear stating "Duplicates can be had for $1.50 at Cartwrights, Owosso". Milton V. Cartwright is listed in the "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" by David V. Tinder, published by Clements Library, 2013. One of the largest gatherings ever of the Ku Klux Klan, over 100,000 people swarmed to Jackson, Michigan on July 4th, 1924 to witness or take part in the fair-like festivities of the so-called "Klonklavation". Thousands of Klansmen marched through the streets of Jackson in a parade that stretched for 2 miles and included 17 floats, 8 bands, and a women's drum corps. At the meeting grounds, which were closely guarded by several hundred Klansmen, the crowds were entertained by a biplane and aerial stuntsman( the plane and a parachutist are seen above the campgrounds in the photograph!). A truly amazing and RARE photograph showing the Klan at the height of their numbers in the US. Internal divisions, criminal behavior by leaders, and external opposition brought about a collapse in membership by 1930.. First Printing. Photograph. Near Fine.

Original prints of two of the most memorable of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present images are an extraordinary pair of photographs, one from a near face-on p.o.v., the other from right profile, of a large group of Zulu tribesmen, in warrior regalia, seated and watching a motion picture (in the first of the images the 16mm projector is visible in the background). Oblong Folio (12.5" x 15.5"), contemporary pictorial black lacquered boards inlaid in relief with bone, containing fifty hand-colored albumen photographs measuring generally 7.75 " x 10" mounted recto and verso to 25 thick card leaves, with tissue guards interleaved. Forty-four of the images are titled in the negative. The map depicts a camp with symbols of canons, along Fox Creek and Little Fox River. Notation on verso "Plan of Camp May 9, 1779." On left corner: "Hedq [Headquarters] of God____." There are a few possible locations based on the name Little Fox River, but perhaps the most likely seems to be in what was then referred to as the Northwest Territory, in present day Illinois, some 58 miles south of Vincennes, because there are recorded military activities in the area in the timeframe. In December 1778 the British took Ft. Sackville, in Vincennes on the Wabash River along the border of present day Illinois and Indiana.
