1687 1ed History of Poland Ottoman Empire Polish WARS John III Sobieski Sandrart

A rare, late 17th-century account of the state of Poland into the wars with the Ottoman Empire. This work, written by Jacob von Sandrart, is often considered one of the best works of Polish history, and this first edition is considered exceedingly rare. While this example lacks the illustrations and maps, it still proves to be an excellent source of various Polish wars, the reigns of notable monarchs, and the role of the House of Vasa.

1901 Booker T Washington 1ed Up from Slavery American Poverty KKK Racism

"Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others."
― Booker T. Washington, Up from Slavery

Booker T. Washington was a famous 19th-century American civil rights activist known for his anti-slavery platform during the height of Negro lynchings in the American South. Born as a slave child during the American Civil War, Washington describes his difficulties and obstacles in his autobiography 'Up From Slavery'. This work follows more than forty years of his life, the state of race relations, and the rise and fall of the Negro social ladder.

While many authors and political leaders, such as WEB du Bois, were highly critical of Washington's work, he still emphasized the importance of education among the black population, especially in the South, which was a realistic tactic to easing racial tensions. This book was also gives the first mention of extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

1787 Daniel Defoe Voyage Round the World English Colonization Robinson Crusoe 2v

"It is never too late to be wise."
– Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe

Daniel Defoe was an English author who gained enduring fame for his novel, Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel and helped popularize the genre in Britain. In some texts he is even referred to as one of the founders, if not the founder, of the English novel.

While Robinson Crusoe is his best and most iconic work, he wrote numerous other works including another adventure voyage book called "A New Voyage Round the World". Certainly this work is nowhere near as popular or as well-known as 'Robinson Crusoe', it does show Defoe's interest in world travel and English colonization. According to Jane Jack,
"Colonization made a deep appeal to Defoe's imagination. To him, a colony was a symbol. It stood for his optimistic conception of human nature, representing his conception of the good life of… Read More

1775 Revolutionary War MONEY 1ed Early American Banknote $2 Bill Dollars Finance
An incredibly rare and valuable 18th-century example of Revolutionary War money!
During the height of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress needed finding a way to pay the newly found American army. In 1775, the Continental Currency was first printed to supplement income. And while the value of these notes depreciated in value throughout the war, they hold significant historical and financial value today. These notes hold a reminder of the horrors of uncontrolled inflation and provide an important view into the history of American finance.
This two-dollar note was printed in Philadelphia by Hall and Sellers in 1775 – an incredible example of first edition American money!

Description:
1682 Bible & Letters of Saint Jerome Catholic Church History Asceticism PARIS

"When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting."
– Jerome, Epistle 58

Saint Jerome was a 4th-century, early church father. While he was most known for his translation of the Bible, he also wrote a collection of letters which are now known his 'Epistles.' These letters were written on a variety of topics, but most of them were written as warnings against sin and detestable devices such as sexual immorality within the clergy, clothing advised for virgins, gluttony and fasting, and laboring over Biblical texts. These letters were written to and from important men and women of the church such as Augustine, Theophilus, Heliodorus, and the Popes.

This 1682 French edition was published in Paris by Couterot, translated by Jean Petit, and features a portrait frontispiece of Jerome.

Nuremburg: J. von Sandart, 1675. Copper engraving with early colour. Printed on laid paper. Title in manuscript ink on verso of sheet. Cleveland Historical Society collection stamp on verso of sheet. Numerous tears and creases in outside margins, which have been expertly repaired. Center fold has been strengthened. An early map of Africa by the great mapmaker Jacob von Sandrart, engraved by Homann. Sandrart's stunning map of Africa is a close copy of Fredrik de Wit's map, 'Nova Africa Descriptio' published in 1660. With the prime meridian running through Ferro Island, the map is typical of late seventeenth century maps of Africa. Like other maps of the period, Sandrart has included a highly decorative and informative cartouche in the lower left corner of the sheet. Homann's continental cartouches aspired to convey the natural history as well as the costume and manner of life of the human inhabitants. Here, while a woman peacefully nurses her baby in a hammock, a native chief stares out at the viewer… Read More
