Krilof and his fables,

by KRYLOV, Ivan Andreevich

Condition: Near Fine

1869 1st ed Russian FABLES Ivan Krylov Russia Aesop La Fontaine Illustrated

Ivan Krylov is still to this day Russia's best and most popular fabulist. Living at the turn of the 19th-century, Krylov did not begin writing fables until 1809, when he was 40 years old when he began adapting many of Aesop's and Fontaine's fables. However, Krylov put his own 'Russian' twist throughout his fables adding satire and whit not necessarily prevalent in the original versions. His fables were written to make light of controversial political situations occurring in Russian in the early 19th-century.

This first English edition was adapted and translated by W.R.S. Ralston and David Douglas, and features charming vignette engravings at fable headings.
