London: Royal Geographical Society, 1880. Author: Major F. C. H. Clarke Publisher: London: Edward Stanford, Royal Geographical Society, 1880. Item is in Original Condition, with Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads!!! Notes & Condition: A strategically significant center situated in Xinjiang, northwestern China, the Kudlja district, then part of Russian Central Asia, forms the subject of this succinct yet comprehensive sketch, and is complete with a map of the Russo-Chinese frontier in Turkestan which was largely disputed in the 1870s. Following a historical summary of great dynasties and early trade, the author discusses Russian occupation in 1871, only nine years earlier. Further points of interest are the means of communication, including detailed descriptions of bridle paths and the main artery, that being the "great Chinese carriage road which leads from Nanking by way of Hankow, Ngan-si-chow, and Hami, to Turfan." Distribution of people groups, such as the Taranchis, Dungans, Torguts, Kalmuks, is present, as is mention of minerals, coal and other valuable resources. The author was a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, fluent in the Russian language, and as such draws information from Russian sources not otherwise discernable, nor accessible to his English contemporaries, as well as from renowned Orientalists. Excerpts from the text: "Perhaps there is no district in Central Asia which has played so prominent a part in the history of the East as that of Kuldja. Situated at the north-west corner of the vast central plateau, at the only point where this plateau is accessible, the greatest highway of the Kuldja Oasis has served as a resting place for those vast hordes, whose migrations, conquests and defeats, spread over centuries, form an important chapter in the world's history." "...so great were the disorders which ensued between the two Mahomedan factions in their struggle for supreme power, that an opportunity was offered for the intervention of the Russian, who occupied the country in 1871." "It would now, however, appear that the recent negotiations opened by China at the court of St. Petersburg for the restoration of the province have proved abortive, the conditions attached by the Russians to the retrocession being so onerous as to render them inacceptable at Peking." End Excerpts. 8vo. 10 pages, plus a fold-out colour map measuring 17 x 8.5 inches. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This volume further contains an expedition account of M. Severtsof's Journey in Ferghana, Central Asia, during the era of Russian encroachment and conquest, under the leadership of Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufmann, the first Governor-General of Russian Turkestan. (Fergana lies in what is now eastern Uzbekistan). Very Good.
