Paris - E. Dentu, 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with gilt title to the spine,marble paper covered boards, marble paper pastedowns,and illuminated letters. This volume is in French and contains a biography of the papal candidate, Tigrane. This volume bears the bookplate of Elizabeth Sherman. Shewas the youngest child of Charles Taylor Sherman and Eliza Williams. She was also the neice of the American Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman and Senator John Sherman. Considered one of the most beautiful and intelligent women in the Washington of the late 1870s to early 1880s Elizabeth was romantically linked with the American novelist, journalist and historian Henry Adams. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages attached. There is some wear to the extremities including slight rubbing to the edges of the boards, and some discolouration to the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall the volume is in very good condition..
