(Roberts: A42j). In 1930, an abridged version was published in the U.S. This version was abridged based on censorhip concerns. This edition also publishes a letter (as the foreward) by Archibald Macleish stating his opinion that the book is not obscene. There is also a 39 page introduction by Mark Schorer, which takes the form of a critical discussion of the three versions of the novel that resulted in the "psychological realism of the final version".
