About This Item

New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 1997 Oxford University Press, New York. 1997. Hardcover. First printing by line number. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Near Fine; light shelfwear to head and tail. DJ: Near Fine; bumping at head and tail. Ivory boards with rust cloth overlay on spine with bright gilt lettering on spine. 240pp 8vo. Roswell Lamson was one of the boldest and most skillful young officers in the Union Navy. He commanded more ships and flotillas than any other officer of his age or rank in the service and climaxed this with his captaincy of the USS Gettysburg, the fastest ship in the navy in 1864. On of the few accounts from a naval officer, "these letters the best Civil War navy letters ever read" and capture the spirited personality of Lamson himself. A clean pristine copy.
