The first edition of this work, in the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscriptions to the front paste down and the front free end paper. 21 plates including the frontispiece. Collated complete. Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. This work is an exploration of the Norfolk Breckland, deriving its name from the unusual gorse-covered sandy heath there. It is one of the driest areas in England and is now a Special Protection Area, as its flora and fauna are of great interest. Charles Kent (1823-1902) was an English poet, biographer, and journalist. He was editor of the Sun from 1845 to 1870, while studying law. He was called to the bar in 1859 as a member of Middle Temple, but thereafter devoted himself to literature.
