This book is in good condition. There is a substantial amount of wear on the front, back and spine of the cover boards. The edges of the cover boards are also worn. The corners have also been bumped considerably. The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board. The pages are beginning to yellow and tan.

This remark seems originally to have been regarded as among the more penetrating of Samuel Johnson's obiter dicta, though at present it is hard "get" it to believe that it ever made much sense. Nowadays Greek is like lace in that few men care whether they "get" any or not. However, a little rummaging in the debris of history reveals that not so very long ago a knowledge of Greek, like the possession of an assortment of lace cuffs and jabots, was an indispensable mark of a gentleman. Things went from bad to worse, as they inevitably seem to do, so that by the middle of the last century only the clergy were making any effort to uphold Dr. Johnson's standards, and most of them had given up lace...." - Introduction from The Language of the New Testament
