About This Item

Joseph Foret, Paris, 1961. 1st Edition. SOFTCOVER. Hefty catalogue for the 1961 Paris exhibition devised around the mammoth one-off book produced by Joseph Foret in collaboration primarily with Salvador Dali. The book weighed over 210 kg, including its bejewelled covers, and featured original work by, among others, Cocteau, Buffet, Foujita, Zadkine, Mathieu, and Fini, as well as Dali who contributed paintings, designed the covers and oversaw parts its production. The book received much worldwide press attention at the time, and was successfully exhibited around the world for over 10 years, though interest was mainly for the cost and opulence of the materials used to make it than for its artistry, foreshadowing Damien Hirst's 'Diamond Skull' of 2007. This 4to, 395pp catalogue bound in textured faux vellum stiff covers, reproduces much of the book (in reduced size and without any jewels) with hand tipped-in plates in colour and line showing the illustrations. The latter part of the catalogue concerns the production of the book and has photos in text showing the artists and craftspeople at work. Thick, heavy 4to. in printed paper wrappers, PLUS loosely inserted 8pp essay by Pierre Gueguen 'La Genese d'un Grand Livre' (as issued) __CONDITION : VERY GOOD+ an unmarked and very clean and tight copy (covers and page-block edges slightly tanned, slight wrinkle to some leaves adjacent to the tipped in plates - common to most copies due to glue used to paste the illustrations into the book). A nice copy. ... __We always ship in PROTECTIVE CARD PARCELS
