About This Item
London: Smith, Elder, & Co. / J.B. Lippincott Company, 1867. FIRST EDITION in two 8vo volumes, half green calf with raised bands compartmented and gilt blind stamp decorated and morocco labels and marbled boards. Scarce. With thirty-two plates, plus thirty-two vignettes in the text. Some copies of this book have two pages of ads at the end of Volume II. This copy does not, but Sadleir states that these ads did not appear in many copies. Moderate wear to extremities. Overall a VERY GOOD set. 'I regard this as the best novel I have written. there is a true savour of English life all through the book'. The last of the six chronicles of the fictional Barsetshire, this work severed his working relationship with Millais, who was rejected in favour of George Smith. It is most famous for the stunning death scene of Mrs. Proudie, a literary coup de grace that Trollope later claimed to regret, despite its enormous and resonant impact on readers. . First Edition. Half Calf Leather. Very Good. Illus. by George H. Thomas. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover.
