Very rare photographic image by this artist , in the original restored frame . This is not one of the standard tourist pictures that you find but a true work of art by this master photographer. Both Brogi and the Alinari Brothers worked as photographers and took the standard architecture ruins photos in Italy most being small 8"x10" Albumen prints , but they did art photography also and to find one is a rare treat . This piece shows three men in a row boat on the Tiber River with Castel Saint`Angelo ( Mausoleum of Adrian ) on the right the Saint`Angelo bridge to the castle in the middle in the far distance you can see St. Peter's Dome . Watercolor. 12-3/4" x 9-3/4". No date. Signed by Cummings at the lower left with "Pornic" written in his hand on the lower right. Cummings visited Pornic, a seaside village on the French Atlantic coast, and painted a number of outdoor scenes while he was there, frequently of French peasants at their work. This painting was part of an exhibit at the Gotham Book Mart some time in the late '60s or '70s and bears their notation "GBM #412" on verso. Mortensen was the telegraph operator aboard the Hans Egede, the ship on which Kent made two of his three celebrated voyages to Igdlorssuit, Greenland, where he would live off and on between 1929 and 1935. His life and work among the native Greenlanders during these years resulted in two of his greatest books: Greenland Journal and Salamina. A landscape painting by Cummings of a colorful tree on the shore of Silver Lake in New Hampshire, where the Cummings family had a summer home. In the background is Mount Chocorua, one of the most frequent subjects of Cummings' artwork. The use of a bright and vivid palette is reminiscent of Matisse, Kandinsky, and the Fauvists, all of whom have been cited as influences on Cummings as an artist. Thematically and as a composition, this image also owes a debt to Cezanne, one of Cummings' great idols as a painter and an influence, as he said, on both his and other Modernist writers' poetry and fiction by virtue of his providing "a new way of seeing things."
