About This Item

London: The Illustrated London News. Very Good+. 1879. First Edition. Print. The Illustrated London News; No. 2096; Vol. LXXV; 1 pages; Image measures 14.5 X 9 inches; matted measures 22 X 14 inches. Full page with two wood engravings from the August 16, 1879 issue of The London Illustrated News depicting The Late Commandant Piet Uys, Transvaal Mounted Colunteers, Killed in the Zulu War AND The Holloway Sanatorium at Virginia Waters. First engraving: after the massacare of Retief and his men by Dingane and the subsequent Zulu attacks on the Voortrekker laagers in Natal, commandos led by Uys and Potgieter rode to their aid. During the subsequent Battle of Italeni both Uys and his second son, Dirkie, were killed. The part of Uys' commando that remained behind (under the command of Field Cornet Potgieter), were surrounded and had to fight their way out. Due to the outcome of the battle, the Voortrekker forces involved in the fighting subsequently became known as the Vlugkommando(Flight Commando). Uys was to be the only Voortrekker leader to be killed in battle during the Great Trek. In retaliation the Voortrekkers formed the Vegkommando (Fight commando) which decisively defeated the Zulu in the Battle of Blood River. Second engraving: Holloway Sanatorium was an institution for the treatment of those suffering temporary mental illness, situated on 22 acres (9 ha) of aesthetically landscaped grounds near Virginia Water, Surrey, England, about 22 miles (35 km) south-west of Charing Cross. Its largest buildings, including one listed at Grade I, have been restored and supplemented as Virginia Park, chiefly comprising Crossland House, Additional postage may be required. .
