He was awarded the 1958 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The Middle Age of Mrs Eliot and later received a knighthood for his services to literature. This was his sixth novel and a rich one, about a dysfunctional family filled with characters fascinatingly flawed. The plots are "page turning", 'can't put it down for each character. The prose is excellent, not verbose, and every word 'tells'.
