About This Item
Cambridge: U.S. State Department Harvard University. Very Good. 1949. First Edition. Binder. iv, 122; 8; 3; 5; 280 pages; The item offerred here is a bound notebook containing several documents related to China and Chinese Studies compiled for the use of scholars, especially those utilizing the resources of Harvard University. Except for the State Department work, these are mimeographed publications for limited private distribution. There is a short tear to first title page, some pencil annotations on a few pages and notes on some interleaved lined paperstock, otherwise very good condition. The last work in this notebook -- Leaders of Communist China [OCLC 38807755 citing only 4 locations] -- was produced by The Office of Libraries and Intelligence Acquisitions of the State Department in original green printed wrappers stamped August 4 1950 and "Restricted." In the wake of the Chinese Revolution and the ascendancy of the Communist goverment of Mao Tse-Tung in October of 1949, there was a concerted effort to gather and make available to foreign policy and intelligence agencies the critical information on the new leaders of that massive Asian nation. From the foreword: "This study contains 373 biographies of the most prominent persons in Communist China, both in the Central People's Government and the Communist Party. The study is prepared in two sections, the biographies following a brief directory which is the basis for the selection of the persons included. ... based on information available up until February 15, 1950 " The directory included in the work was particularly illuminating in outlining the organizational structure and personnel composition of the newly established goverment and the CCP. The first work in this notebook binder "Communist Chinese Publications" [OCLC 10859815] was published by the Russian Research Center at Harvard University in 1949. Other works include "Harvard University Committee on International Studies on Use of Chinese Materials," Sun Yat-Sen Bibliography," "Bibliography in English on Sun Yat-Sen available in Widner Library," and "Catalogue of Chinese Newspapers." .
