Leaf from the Nuremberg Chronicle

by SCHEDEL Hartmann

  • Used
Augsburg, 1497. Second edition (in Latin). printed in black in two columns on cream paper, brown ink notations in margins (by the portrait of Aesop “...poeta fabulator clarissime”. Right margin of recto slightly browned and with some small remnants of old paper adhering to it, else crisp and clean. Stamped on verso “From the Nuremberg Chronicle 1497”. Folio (294 x 200 mm). One leaf only Illustrated with eleven woodblocks The Nuremberg Chronicle is the most illustrated book of the fifteenth century and is a vast chronicle of world history from the time of creation to the time of publication, 1493. The illustrations are woodcuts which are highly skilled and show wonderful artistry, executed by Michael Wohlgemut who was Albrech Dürer’s teacher, and by his stepson Wilhelm Playdenwurff, and both their names are mentioned in the colophon. The book was so popular that it was “pirated” or reproduced without permission or any payment of any fee by Johann Schonsperger in 1497, and a reduced size version was published in Augsburg. Since it was a reduced size he also had to have new illustrations cut to fit the format; they copied the original illustrations, a simpler process than creating completely new ones. This leaf is headed “Quinta etas mundi” [see BMC II, p. 437. see Goff S-307. see Hain-Copinger 14508].

Title continues: "and interspersed with extracts in the same stanza as the original, by William Stewart Rose." Berni recast Boiardo's poem. "Berni undertook the revision of the whole poem, avowedly altering no sentiment, removing or adding no incident, but simply giving to each line and stanza due gracefulness and polish. His task he completed with marvellous success; scarcely a line remains as it was, and the general opinion has pronounced decisively in favour of the revision over the original. An excellent example from the Nuremberg Chronicle. Leaf XLVII. The Nuremberg Chronicle is the most extensively illustrated book, and one of the most important, of the 15th century.
