This is a lot of 16 volumes of the writings of Reverend Frederick Denison ("F.D.") Maurice. The books range in date from 1855 to 1894. All volumes were published by Macmillan and Co. in London. F.D. Maurice was an English Anglican theologian, a profilic author, and one of the founders of Christiam socialism. Maurice's writings, lectures and sermons spawned conflicting opinions - Julius Hare considered his "the greatest mind since Plato," John Ruskin thought him "by nature puzzle-headed and indeed wrong-headed," while John Stuart Mill considered that "there was more intellectual power wasted in Maurice than in any other of my contemporaries." Lewis Carroll attended Maurice's morning and afternoon services commenting, "I like his sermons very much."

The lot is in overall very good condition both inside and out. Clean covers with no stains; a few of the volumes have some light corner wear and fraying to the top and bottom edges of the spine. All volumes were gone through and the pages are in terrific condition with the exception of 5 volumes which have some pencil writing in the outer margins and/or lines in the outer margins to highlight paragraphs. Some pages in some of the books are still attached at the top edge from the printer. Inscription written in ink dated 1894 on the half title page of some books. "Religions of the World" has cloth tears along the right edge of the spine. Overall a clean lot both inside and out.
