In 1816 Lawrence printed his first course of lectures as "An Introduction to Comparative Anatomy and Physiology" and subsequent lectures in 1819 "On the Physiology, Zoology, and Natural History of Man." Contemporary theologians discerned in these lectures an attempt to undermine the foundations of religion, and Lord Eldon refused an injunction to protect the rights of the author in them on the ground that they contradicted the scriptures. Lawrence argued in this title that human qualities were passed on directly from one human to another through birth and that the mind, not the soul, was the home of thought. These lectures are considered by some to be the beginning of modern anthropology in Britain.
