About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1874. Very Good+ condition. SEE PHOTOS. Bright, clean, square, tight, and unmarked. Corners are NOT bumped. A few pages with light foxing. Brief gift note, dated "Xmas 1874" on the front free endpaper. Illustrated with 3 of 4 tipped-in (original?) photographs, as called for by the table of contents. The photos, credited to "Vincent Brooks, Day & Son" are of Newark Castle, Craigmillar, and Culloden Moor. The view of Dunstaffnage Castle has been neatly removed. The tipped-in photographs (to my admittedly untrained eye) appear to be original. However, they may be photochemical reproductions, since this book is not mentioned in INCUNABULA OF BRITISH PHOTOGRAPHIC LITERATURE, 1839-1875 by Helmut Gernsheim. Even so, this is a appealing copy of a scarce book of legends, some traditional, others "purely imaginary," told in verse, mostly in "Scotch dialect." Top edge gilt. Bound in the original bevel-edged green cloth, decorated in gilt with a coat of arms, thistle, and other ornaments.. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+ condition. 155pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
