About This Item
Braunschweig, 29 April 1788. In German, untranslated. 43 lines on 2 pp. 9 x 7 inches, a couple of clean tears along upper edge only, in good clean condition. With a separate portrait and biographical entry. Recently discovered, and in need of translation and research. Joachim Heinrich Campe (1746 1818) was a German writer, linguist, educator and publisher. Probably his best-known work is his Robinson der Jüngere (1779/80), a free adaptation of Daniel Defoes Robinson Crusoe (1719). In 1787 Campe founded his own publishing house, the Braunschweigische Schulbuchhandlung. Intrigued by the political movements in France in 1789, Campe and his former pupil Wilhelm von Humboldt travelled to Paris.
