Boston, 1861. unbound. 4 pages (front and back) on embossed blind-stamp letterhead, each two-page spread measuring 7.5 x 9.75 inches, Boston, July 29, 1861. Written and signed by Marie Goodwin, the constant companion to Mrs. Samuel Appleton (aka "Aunt Sam"), giving a firsthand account of the tragic and horrific death of Fanny Longfellow and its aftermath, in part: "...I know you will be interested in hearing of the welfare of the family since the distressing death of Mrs. Longfellow. The papers were quite correct in their statements. A match probably set fire to a very delicate muslin dress she wore and in her fright she rushed into the room where Mr. Longfellow was - thus increasing the flames, and in a few moments she was so much burned that life was despaired of. Mr. Longfellow did what he could by wrapping a rug round her and the servants came with water. Ether was given her and through the night she was mostly unconscious from its effects, she sank away quietly about ten o'clk the next morning. Poor Mr. Longfellow has suffered since very severely, both hands being burned, but the Physicians think he will in time recover their use. His sister Mrs. Peirce [Anne Longfellow] is constantly with him and the children are to be under the care of a Governess...It was thought best to tell Mr. Nathan Appleton [Fanny's father] of the dreadful calamity which had befallen Mrs Longfellow and also of its results. He was very weak and had felt for some time that his end was near, and it is not thought that his death was hastened by the intelligence. He wanted to hear all the particulars of the accident and he saw all the family after their return from Cambridge and was told of the funeral. He was rather restless and could not sleep that night and at four o'clk on Sunday morning he quietly passed away as if in sleep..." Natural folds; very good(+) condition. Nathan Appleton, a former U.S. Congressman and banker, was too weak to attend his daughter's funeral and died one day after she was buried. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow suffered severe burns to his hands and extensive scarring to his face -- so much that he forever thereafter grew his trademark beard to hide his disfigurement. He also was unable to attend the funeral. The story that all newspapers carried specifically stated that Mrs. Longfellow was melting wax to seal lockets of her children's hair in envelopes when the hot wax dripped on her, igniting her dress. Fifty years later, Longfellow's youngest daughter Annie explained the story differently, claiming that there had been no candle or wax but that the fire had started from a self-lighting match that had fallen on the floor. This, according to the Massachusetts Historical Society, was the first reference to a match. Marie Goodwin mentions the match in this letter and it is very feasible that she shared this story with Annie Longfellow (the baby of the family) whom she was extremely close to.

Description:
Small quarto, 2 pages, with a conjugate blank leaf. Thin strip of tissue-paper on the outside rear page, and minimal loss to this blank leaf near the centre of the hinge (both as a result of having been mounted in, then removed from, an album); light creases where folded in four for posting; in excellent condition. Humboldt writes to introduce the geologist Alexandre Brongniart, remembering with gratitude the assistance rendered by le Duc to himself and his friends and collaborators, [Louis Joseph] Gay-Lussac and [Christian Leopold von] Buch. He hopes that M. Brongniart, 'l'homme célèbre', who wishes to visit Vesuvius and the lava flows of Ischia, will be afforded similar kindnesses. Nicola Filomarino, duca della Torre and principe di Boiano, devoted much of his scientific career to the study of Vesuvius and the volcanology of Campania. In August 1805 he accompanied Humboldt to the crater of Vesuvius, with Humboldt's journal recording that his observations were made with the aid of the Duke's… Read More

1898. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter on both sides of a piece of Naval and Military Club stationery with the club emblem and a black border, dated 13 July 1898. General Bindon Blood (1842-1940), a British Army commander who served in India, Southern Africa, and Afghanistan, is responding to an invitation. He was in London briefly in the summer of 1898 after being appointed major general and before returning, as he references here, to the Meerut district of India, "which is one of the very best commands in India." He was appointed in command of that district in September 1898. Although he spend part of 1901 fighting in the Second Boer War, he returned to India later that year. In 1907 he retired to London. Winston Churchill served under Blood in 1897 and dedicated The Story of the Malakand Field Force to him. In Near Fine Condition: small discoloration on the first side; otherwise, clean and crisp.

Stuttgart, Germany: Edition Dornberger, 1971. Original folded silkscreen Christmas card . Dated, inscribed, and signed by famed American artist Robert Indiana: "25-XII-'73. Agnes. Greetings. So nice to receive your note--the "Art" sculpture is at Colby for '75 Inaugural (on loan). Bob." Indiana created Christmas cards that he sent to his personal friends, and Agnes almost certainly was the important Canadian-American artist Agnes Martin. I have not yet determined which sculpture is referenced in the note. The silkscreen is in near-fine condtion: clean and bright, with a hint of wear along the folding edge; the fold is slightly askew revealing a bit of the white margin of the note.. SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Near Fine. Illus. by Robert Indiana. 5 7/8 Inches X 5 7/8 Inches. Fine Art Print.

Bibliographical Notes, Biographical Entries, Critical Notes, Extracts and Anecdotes by Wenceslao Emilio Retana
With The History of the Philippine Press, 1811-1910 by Jose Victor Z. TorresTranslated and Annotated by Jaime M. Marco

Wenceslao E. Retana's El Periodismo Filipino captures the glorious struggle of Filipino thought as it strove to break free in public media. Retana's voluminous research on the first century of Philippine journalism is a thrilling documentation of the emancipation of Filipino intellectuality following a surprisingly linear emplotment: from halting ignorance to tentative expressions, then to raging radicalism and freethinking that exploded into the Philippine Revolution of 1896, only for its republican and progressive ideals to be dashed once again by a new and insidious colonial master.
In the book we witness print culture slipping away from two and a half centuries of Spanish friar control, which previously had only emphasized translation and doctrinal… Read More
