About This Item

Melbourne: Keating-Wood, 1925. First Edition. Presentation copy from Leon Heron, dated 11th of September, 1927.

Classic set of art deco 'pin-up girl' prints by Leon Heron (including one image of Felix the Cat being disciplined by a scantily-clad redhead): 1. Fascination 2. The Medicine Ball 3. Machéta 4. Folly 5. Naughty 6. Felix, Be Good!

'The Modern Girl and the merest male were sauntering down the sunny side of the street upon a particular day in 1925, talking of hardly anything other than very little at all. Just by way of passing a comment, and perchance because nothing else occurred to her at the moment, she spoke thus : "Girls have never been so attractive as they are to-day ; except perhaps in their original state in a garden called Eden," which was, all things to be considered, a most un-catty sentiment to be declared.
"You refer, I dare to presume, to (a) the shingle, (b) the short skirt, and (c) the total absence of hips?" Being just the response one might expect from her companion, the merest male.
"The way they were their clothes ; the way - oh, everything ! The tout ensemble." This from her, and again : "We alone are eloquent of the period in which we make our being."
"But of course, Science, Art, Literature, Wars and Politics don't mean a thing in the scheme of things," waxed he sarcastic.
"Be serious, fool!" - came icily - "The girls of to-day are wonderful. They should be immortalized. Take me for instance ; and to afternoon tea." This last a command.
"...console yourself, most adorable of women, for it would seem that every generation begets an artist who is able to capture and keep captive the elusive caprice of the girl of his day."
And so we have Leon Heron. Folio, 12 pages, bound in original cord-tied wrappers with pictorial onlay, six full-page water colour prints of pin-up girls on glossy paper, a few mild marks and chips to edges of covers with dappled foxing, prints are bright and near fine.
