About This Item
Monticello, NY, 1834. A manuscript letter dated June 23rd, 1834 from J. Mones of Monticello to G.O. Fowler and George Cornwall of Newburgh, NY regarding the distribution of notes from the Highland Bank in Newburgh which had 'become limited east of the River' since the establishment of the Westchester Bank. He suggests that they should focus on Sullivan County and parts of Pennsylvania, also that the 'friends' of the bank (stockholders) will be those 'who will keep it [shares] ... so as to counteract the political management of the Orange County Bank.' Marked "confidential" at head of letter.
Highland Bank was chartered April 26, 1834, with a capital of $200,000. Highland Bank's first president was Gilbert O. Fowler.
9 3/8 x 7 1/2" folded, 2 pages, original fold marks, with "Free" written in postage area, remnants of a red wax seal, tear at seal.
