About This Item
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1899 Each volume inscribed "General Saxton / With kind regards of / Edward W. Hooper" on the front free endpapers. Captain Edward William Hooper [1839-1901] also known as E. W. Hooper, was aide-de-camp on the staff of Union General Rufus Saxton during the American Civil War, from 1862 to 1865. Hooper also served as private secretary to General Saxton, when he was given the rank of Captain. General Rufus Saxton [1824-1908] commanded the defences of Harpers Ferry in 1862, where he earned the Medal of Honor. Vol. I - ix, [3], 353pp, [1], complete with three tissue-guarded plates, as called for. Binding is tight, front hinge cracked, back hinge starting, wear to upper/lower spine edges. Vol. II - vii, [3], 264pp, [2], complete with 2 tissue-guarded plates, the fac-simile Letter, and the map, as called for. Binding and hinges are tight, light wear to upper/lower spine edges. Uniformly bound in blue cloth, gilt on spines bright, top edges gilt. Both volumes printed on laid paper, and have small Brentano's label inside the covers.
