Content: When R.M.Lockley settled on Skokholm, an uninhabited island of the Pembrokeshire coast, he was 24 years old. It was a boyhood dream to be 'with birds and flowers in some remote place, ' to live like Robinson Crusoe. He rebuild a ruined cottage with timber salvaged from a wrecked schooner. He farmed and fished to make a living. He studies the wildlife of the island. And with his wife, Do, he had a daughter. For 12 years Skokholm was their family home. When war broke out in September 1939, this dream island life had to be abandoned. Knowing he may never return, Lockley began writing about the history and wildlife of his island. He sent what he wrote to his friend and brother-in-law John Buxton - a naturalist captured by the Germans in Norway in 1940. These letters to a prisoner-of-war, intended to solace Buxton it his captivity became this book.
