Bruxelles, 1768 An extremely scarce original copy of Abbe Coyer's spoof on the then hot topic of giant Patagonian people. There had been reports since Magellan's expedition in 1520 of a race of giants in Patagonia. Byron's expedition of 1766 in The Dolphin sparked further speculation that evidence of this race had been found. Coyer published a response to Dr Maty's (a fellow member of the Royal Society) letter on the subject, presenting an imaginary land peopled by giant Patagonians. [Travelers and Travel Liars 1660-1800 by Percy G Adams gives a detailed account of the Giant Patagonian story] In newer marbled card binding with leather label to spine. Contents: half title; title page; and text 138pp. The binding is slightly worn but clean and sound. Contents very clean with a little light staining to the top outside corner of around 4pp.

Description:
Bungay: C Brightley and T Kinnersley, 1804 First edition in 2 volumes comprehensively illustrated with high quality plates and maps. The Reverend Blomfield drew on a variety of sources, eg Oliver Goldsmith, Bruce to produce a work which covers a wide range of topics including 'animated nature', astronomy, geology and 'mathematical geography' as well as a tour of the world as it was known then. Blomfield clearly wanted to produce a work that was so comprehensive that it was the only work that anyone would need to read on those subjects. The plate listing only refers to around half the plates and maps. Both volumes retain the original marbled boards which are rubbed, and have new pigskin leather spines and corners and new endpapers. The spines do not have labels. Volume I, 827 pp, contains frontispiece, vignette title page, preface, text covering geology, nature, europe, and much else, and 9 full page engravings, 10 full page maps, 1 folding map and 1 folding chart. Volume II, dated… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for Dan. Browne, and Lockyer Davis, 1753 A good copy of the 4th edition of Martin Martin's account of his visit to St Kilda in 1697 (first published in 1698). Martin Martin lived on Skye and was a gaelic speaker. He decided to visit and study the western isles of Scotland to record both the land and its culture and natural history. Although Martin's account was mocked by some, particularly because he was considered too believing of local tales, it was much read and reprinted. This copy is in a probably later 1800's half leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has blind stamped decoration and gilt compartments with leather title label to spine. It sound and clean with some rubbing at joints, edges and corners and a little scuffing. There is the armorial bookplate of Edward Herbert, Earl of Powis to the front pastedown, and some marking to the endpapers suggesting that a cover was stuck down over the book at some point. Contents: initial blank; folding plate of 2 birds… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
