London, printed by W. Wilson, Ave-Maria-Lane, Ludgate-Street, for the author; and sold by G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1793.. FIRST EDITIONS 1793, 2 works bound together, PRESENTATION COPY, FROM THE AUTHOR WITH HIS WIFE'S OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE, ELIZ. CUMBERLAND (in 1787 he eloped with Mrs Elizabeth Cooper, née Price). 2 books bound together, each with its own title page and pagination. 4to, approximately 280 x 220 mm, 11 x 9 inches. LEWINA THE MAID OF SNOWDON, A TALE, etched frontispiece and 2 etched vignettes, pages: title page, [1]-32, [1] erratum followed by 2 blank leaves; A POEM ON THE LANDSCAPES OF GREAT-BRITAIN. [4], title and dedication, [1]-36, full page etching and a vignette, original publisher's boards, uncut as issued, printed paper label to spine, advert for "Some Anecdotes of the life of Julio Bonasoni" by Cumberland pasted to final pastedown. Slight shelf wear to edges of boards, label on spine age-browned, pale spotting and browning to etched plates, otherwise a very good copy. A note on page 36 of Landscapes suggests that further impressions, if called for, may well have extra plates. George Cumberland was an English art collector, writer and poet. He was a lifelong friend and supporter of William Blake, and like him was an experimental printmaker. He was also an amateur watercolourist, and one of the earliest members of the Bristol School of artists. Cumberland was also a collector of fossils and from 1810 was an honorary member of the Geological Society. In 1826 he published Reliquiae conservatae, a study of some fossil encrinites. William Blake died in 1827. The last engraving that Blake made was a visiting card for Cumberland, who had sent the plate to Blake for him to decorate. Blake did so by surrounding Cumberland's name with figures intended to represent the Seasons, including children hoop rolling and flying kites (Wikipedia). ESTC T3202 & 3203.
