About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1886. Good + overall. Sweeping wood engraved panorama featuring a colossal Statue of Liberty, standing out in bold relief against the water and sky and the lower end of Manhattan. At the end of the island Castle Garden is visible; this was America's first official immigration center, serving in that capacity from 1820 to 1892, the year in which Ellis Island opened. At the right is the newly completed Brooklyn Bridge.
Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 by President Grover Cleveland; this large folding Supplement to Harper's Weekly is dated October 30, 1886.
A little ruffled upper right and lower right corners, a few tears marginal tears not entering into the image. 45 1/2 x 16 1/2". OCLC: 664232767 (1 copy) at the American Antiquarian Society.
