"Most people have read the story of Robinson Crusoe and know of the author, Daniel Defoe, by perhaps fewer are acquainted with the name Woodes Rogers or have come across the charming journal of his circumnavigation of the the world, 1708-1711, in the ships Duke and Dutchess. Yet it was Woodes Rogers who discovered the original Crusoe, Alexander Selkirk, on the island of Juan Fernandez, and it was Selkirk's experiences that formed the basis for Defoe's famous novel." from the jacket flap.
