Date on title page, copyright page and leather spine edge. Top edge gilt (excellent condition). Lacks tissue guard (only) to steel-engraved frontispiece of Charles Dickens, painted by David Maclise, (which is in excellent condition). A Fine volume, tight hinges, NO markings at all throughout. Originally issued as a serial 1838 thru 1839. Illustrated with 39 plates, plus frontispiece, (all in place). Half title page present. Very minor light scattered foxing, with slight age-toning to lower margins of illustrated plates. First Issue points: p.245, line 17, 'flys' for 'flies'; p.272, line 2, has 'visiters' instead of 'visitors'; p. 297 line 22 has 'incontestible' for 'incontestable'; and p.586 has 'suprise; for 'surprise. Collectible condition. 624 pages. ** PLUS - A MINT copy of 'FIRSTS Magazine for Collectors', September 1997, Vol 7 #9, which is dedicated to 'Collecting Charles Dickens'. Reference material on every page. Magazine in its own mylar slip.

Lacks frontispiece and half-title. 39 plates. Some foxing to margins of plates, occasionally intruding on the image. With the first edition points present on pages x, xii, xv. Later states at p. 457, p. 500. Plates are in the second state, without the Chapman and Hall imprint. Overall, a good to very good copy, with the omissions and conditions as noted. Charles Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. His third work was 'Nicholas Nickleby', a work which follows Nickleby and his young orphan friend Smike and the adventures they get into. The parts of this work were released in short segments weekly in periodicals in London. It first appeared in complete book form in 1839 by Chapman and Hall.
This example is beautifully bound and includes an engraved portrait frontispiece and engravings by Phiz, as well as all first edition points!

Quarter tan calf over marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt and blind, with brown morocco label, marbled edges. New endpapers, nineteenth century bookseller's label preserved. Portrait foxed, some lighter foxing to other plates, last three plates have some light marginal dampstaining; otherwise very good. Eckel, p.64; Gimbel A41; Smith I, 5. The author's third novel, originally published as a serial from 1838 to 1839. The story centers on the life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, a young man who must support his mother and sister after his father dies.
