London: John Stockdale, 1804. Book. Very Good +. Half-Leather. 2nd Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Two-volume complete set. Second edition, with illustrated engraved title pages dated 1804. The first edition was published in 1790. Original-period red half-leather bindings with red marbled boards and ornate gilt decoration and lettering on the spines with five raised bands. Leather corners and spines have gilt ruled borders. Original pale-blue endpapers. xii + 405 and v + 446 pages (including "The Life of Daniel De Foe" by George Chalmers following the text of the novel in Vol. II) preceded by a frontispiece engraving in the first volume and preceded and followed by two blank pages in both volumes. 16 additional full-page engravings throughout both volumes. Books measure 8 13/16" x 5 3/4" x 1 1/8". Both volumes are in VERY GOOD + condition. Bright and very clean. Rubbing to the edges of the leather corners and just light general wear elsewhere. The spines only have a light touch of sunning and the gilt lettering and decoration and raised bands remain very bright and unworn. Both volumes are tightly bound, solid and square with no cracking to the leather joints or inner hinges. Interiors are excellent. All pages are bright and clean with no foxing, staining, tears or markings. Two separate previous owner's antique bookplates on the front pastedown and front endpaper in both volumes..
