Boston: David H. Ela, Printer, 1845. Good -. viii, 96 p., frontispiece portrait; 23 cm. Lacking binding. This version ends at page 96; it did not include pages 97-104, found in some copies, which contain poetry, or pages 105-108, found in other copies, which contain "From the South." Howes only includes the 108-page version. This is the least common version of the life of Lewis Garrard Clarke (1812-1897), born into slavery in Kentucky. After escaping to Canada in 1841, Clarke was active in speaking against slavery and dictated his experience, presumably to J. C. Lovejoy (1805-1871), author of the Preface and abolitionist. In Good- Condition: lacking binding; loss and closed 2-cm. tear along fore-edge of frontispiece, without loss of image; upper corner of frontispiece creased and lightly soiled; minor loss at fore-edge of title page; foxing and small stains throughout; solid.

New York: Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1906. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the first U.S. edition, only printing, of Winston Churchills 1906 biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. This U.S. edition is visually similar but aesthetically superior to its British counterpart, the volumes featuring gilt top page edges and a ribbed cloth binding with gilt and blind rules and the Marlborough Arms in gilt within a double blind ruled front cover panel. This set is very good condition, sound, complete, and unusually bright and clean despite some minor wear and flaws. The cloth bindings retain strikingly bright red hue and gilt, with no color shift between the covers and spines. The bindings show only minor scuffs and blemishes and light wear to extremities. The Volume I binding is a bit shaken at the front hinge, but still firmly intact. The contents are notably bright and clean, with no spotting and strong top edge gilt. The untrimmed fore and bottom edges are clean, showing…

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
