After working in several San Francisco theatres, Belasco (1853-1931) moved to New York City in 1880 to manage the Madison Square theatre and the Lyceum, before building his own theatre in 1906. Nicknamed the "Bishop of Broadway" for his austere, cleric-like dress and personal manner, he claimed to have been involved in the production of 374 plays. Belasco's experiments with visual effects on the stage set new standards for theatrical production in the United States. Completed by Winter's son Jefferson after his death in 1917. .
