About This Item

London: William Miller, 1801. Full-Leather. Very Good/No jacket - as issued. 24 x 15 cms (9.5" x 6"). Various. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Early and illustrated 4-volume edition of the classic Cervantes novel, published by William Miller of London in 1801. 371, 412, 391 & 440 pages, with fold-out map to volume 1. Size: 24 x 15 cms (9.5" x 6"). Weight: over 4 kilos (9 pounds) PLEASE NOTE, EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGES MAY BE APPLICABLE. CONDITION: I would rate these as very good, commensurate with their age. The full leather bindings , with elaborate spine decoraations, are clean and basically sound. Volumes 1 and 4 have been rebacked, with the original spines laid over (see photos). The bindings remain tight and secure throughout. The text, fold-out map and illustrations are generally clean and bright, with just the odd mark or light foxing spot and some age-toning. There is, however, more foxing to pp 1-17 of volume 3. There is a stylishly penned inscription to the title page of each volume. Overall, a handsome, leather bound, 4-volume early edition for the collector. THE NOVEL: Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the aging Quixote's fancy leads them wildly astray, tilting at windmills, fighting with friars, and distorting the rural Spanish landscape into a fantasy of impenetrable fortresses and wicked sorcerers. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety. Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature its disordered protagonist is obsessed with. Miguel de Cervantes's mock-epic masterwork was voted the greatest book of all time by the Nobel Institute.
