About This Item
Boston: Tappan and Dennet, 1843. Hardcover. Near fine. 8vo. xix,(1),562pp. Illustrated with plates and maps, the plate with tissue-guards. Finely bound in full navy morocco, spine in five compartments with raised bands, intricately gilt; the boards with gilt borders and gilt inner dentelles. All edges gilt. The unsigned binding is almost certainly by George A. Zabriskie, whose bookplate is on the front pastedown. Zabriskie was president of the New York Historical Society in the early part of the 20th century and was also an expert bookbinder. Laid in is a three page letter entirely in manuscript from Jared Sparks to William Leete Stone, and dated 1865. In the letter Sparks expresses great satisfaction with Stone's "Life and Times of Sir William Johnson", published 1865. Light wear to the edges, hinge and corners, offsetting from some plates to the facing pages, and one map lightly foxed, else this is about fine. The letter has a glue residue along the fold from where it was previously tipped into a book, else fine.
