Likely first Everyman's Library edition, 1927 (though undated). An English-language reprint edition, in a translation by C. E. Wilbour. The French historian/scholar/philosopher Joseph Ernest Renan (1823-1892) first published this fictional biography of Jesus in 1863. With an introduction by Bishop Charles Gore. Number 805 in Everyman's Library catalog, in their "Theology and Philosophy" series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- In "flatback" binding style 1, full dark blue cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, dark topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Lacks a dust jacket. --- With prior owners' rubberstampings to front & rear paste-downs, penciled underlinings on perhaps as many as 20 leaves, and some dulling to spine gilding, otherwise a clean, tightly-bound, sound copy.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; xx, 244 pages .
