The Life of John Ledyard, The American Traveller; etc. (2nd ed., 1829) by Jared Sparks; John Ledyard - 1829

Second edition, hardcover, 1829. Condition is Good: Old dark brown blindstamped cloth boards, gilt title on spine "Life of Ledyard". Boards show moderate general wear. Binding is sound. Interior has inscription for "School District Library . . . Moriah" (NY?). No other library markings. Endpapers appear to have been replaced about a century ago. An original endpaper remains at back with a cut created during replacement process. There are tidemarks affecting the final top outer corner with worst being last page (see image); another affecting top interior by spine (see image p.194/195). Neither are catastrophic. Paginates: blanks, (xii), 310, blanks. See Howes S826; Hill 1613; Graff 3923. Although Sparks is given authorial credit there is much writing from Ledyard here. Feel free to inquire. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Ledyard is one of those characters you could not invent for fear of exaggeration. He sailed with Cook on his 3rd voyage and was witness to his death. He saw the Pacific Northwest before Lewis & Clark. He tried crossing Siberia to get to Alaska but was arrested by the Russians. He died in Cairo (1788) while planning an exploration of the Nile suggested to him by Joseph Banks. Great reading about a larger than life character.
