1713 Saint Winifred Life & Miracles WALES Welsh Catholic Martyr Fleetwood

Saint Winifred was a 7th-century Welsh legend and martyr whose life was venerated and honored in the 12th-century. In the mid-17th-century, John falconer translated Robert of Shrewsbury's 12th-century account of Saint Winifred, however, William Fleetwood did not care for Falconer's translation and decided to make his own. This edition features Winifred's biography as well as Winifred's Litanies.

Title page with some minor soiling faint pencil notes at bottom margin and old library stamp on verso. Minor edge wear but overall a very good copy. Scarce book. St. Winifred or St. Gwenfrewy Abbes of Trefynnon and of Gwynthenn (d.600 AD), was honored from early times in Wales as a saint. In 1136 her relics were translated to her shrine at the Benedictine Monastery in Shrewsbury. Two years later her life was written in Latin by Robery, Prior of Shrewsbury (1d.1167). Roberts Life was translated by ÔJFÕ (likely John Falconer) in 1635 and republished in 1712.
