The title continues -- a series of his epistolary correspondence and conversations with many eminent persons; and various original pieces of his composition, never before published: the whole exhibiting a review of literature and literary men in Great Britain, for nearly half a century in which he flourished by James Boswell, Esq. A new edition illustrated by copious notes, and illustrated with numerous portraits, views and characteristic designs engraved, authentic sources. In 4 volumes." All 3 volumes have gilt detailing/infill to the spine, and both front and rear panels of the cloth covered boards are raised to presents various crests, and "National Illustrated Library" in relief. All edges of the pages have darkens with age, the corners are lightly bumped, there is some rubbing of the lower corners. Offset canning/foxing to the preliminary pages of each volume. Clean and free of inscription otherwise. Volume IV complete with a chronological list of Dr Johnson's works, and some advertising from the publisher. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
