Third edition. With two portraits (of Lawrence). xvi, 627 pp. In one volume. Second edition was published in two volumes. Corrections written in pencil in text margins by Lady Edwardes (wife of first author) and note in ink pasted onto fep, notes in pencil on rear blanks and a fine, detailed drawing pasted onto rear ep ("The Residency at Lucknow showing the centre balcony where Sir Henry Lawrence received his death wound" - drawn by Lady Edwardes. Free front endpaper missing. Intermittent spots of foxing in text. Binding sound internally but loosening from spine and boards. Both hinges loose. Brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Cloth at top and bottom of spine much rubbed. Edges and corners of boards rubbed. Overall condition Good-.

Portrait frontispiece with foxed tissue-guard, and one other portrait, xvi + 627pp, appendices, prior owner named bookplate on the front pastedown, rear inner hinge cracked but holding firm, brown cloth covered boards lettered and ruled in black and gilt on the spine, very minor wear at head and tail and corners. A clean and sturdy copy. Sir Henry Lawrence, a man of exceptional talent and ability, (1806-1857) wrote a number of essays and books on Indian subjects but is probably best remembered for his administrative ability, his energy, his sympathies with the Indian aristocracy, his high character and his tragic death in the siege of Lucknow. .
