Pages are mildly tanned with moderate foxing. Mild cracking to hinges, however binding remains firm. Boards have light edgewear with corner crushing and notable marking to boards. Mild tanning to spine, which has mild crushing to ends.

Sepia photographic plates throughout and similar frontispiece with tissue guard. Some black and white illustrations and a fold out sheet. Gilt top to textblock. Pages bright and clean with some tanning and foxing, particularly to textblock edges and endpapers. Minor pencil annotations to front pastedown and a previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Slight cracking to rear hinge with netting exposed. Binding remains firm. Minor corner fraying and edge wear to boards and spine slightly crushed and frayed top and bottom. Some tanning to spine and cracking between spine and rear board. Gilt lettering is dulled on spine and textblock, brighter on front.

This is a facsimile reprint of the 1913 edition. The biography is supplemented by Pitman's own work Stenographic Sound-hand (1837), and details of the evolution of phonography.
