Malleson. In a near fine tree calf binding. This work offers a fascinating insight into first Governor of the Presidency of Fort William, Warren Hastings. Hastings was also the head of the Supreme Council of Bengal, after quickly rising to prominence during the British rule of India. Later on in his life, however, he was a figure of controversy, resigning from his position and returning to England, where he was impeached in the House of Commons for crimes and misdemeanours during his time in India. He was prosecuted and brought to trial. After a long and arduous investigation, Hastings was acquitted on all charges. Written by George Bruce Malleson, a fellow British officer who worked in India. He was a prolific writer, writing biographies of prominent figures such as Akbar and Dupleix, as well as works on Indian history. Some of these include 'History of Indian Mutiny', 'History of the French in India', and 'The Decisive Battles in India'. With a frontispiece portrait of Warren Hastings. Condition: In a full tree calf binding. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the joints, raised bands, and to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Rubbing has resulted in a little loss to the head and tail of the spine. A little discolouration to the spine. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the very odd spot to the first and last few pages. Overall Condition: Near Fine.
