This is the original 'Life' magazine--an "American 'Punch' "--which became famous for its humorous look at the American universe of the gilded age and renowned for its illustration, with many small advertisements of the popular the products of the age. Begun in 1883 by John Ames Mitchell, later purchased in 1936 by Henry Luce and transformed to the larger photographic news publication.
