Very Good. xviii, 352 p., frontispiece portrait of Mark Twain with facsimile inscription to the author by Twain: 32 unpaginated pages of illustrations and 1 full-page illustration included in pagination; 23 cm. Red cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles. Lacking dust jacket. First Edition. Former owner's name inscribed on front free endpaper: Adelaide McC. Rennils 1926. Inscribed below in another hand: "From Clara Gabriolwitsch (Mrs. Ossip Gabrilowitsch)." The book is dedicated "To Clara Clemens Gabrilowitsch and to the imperishable years of our friendship." Clara Clemens Gabrilowitsch Samossoud (1874-1962) was the second daughter of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twan) and a friend of the author, Mary Lawton. In Very Good Condition: corners and ends of spine are rubbed; minor fraying at tail of spine; light foxing, primarily along edges of illustrations; occasional light finger soiling in margins; otherwise, clean and tight.

Contemporary calf spine with six spine compartments between double gilt rules; red morocco label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Mansie Wauch. Marbled paper over boards. All page edges speckled. Remains of old paper label at head of spine and call number in white at tail. In ink on the title page in an old hand, following the title "By Mr Moir." At head of title page in another hand: "To the UPS from Hiester H. Muhlenberg of Reading Pa." Hiester H. Muhlenberg (1812-1886) graduated from Dickinson College in 1829 and practiced medicine in Reading; later he became a banker. With 2 typed letters (one laid in on the front endpapers and both signed by the author) and one telegram from the author, Ruth Little Mason Rice (1884-1927), to poet Caroline Giltinan Harlow (1884- ). Also with a handwritten letter from Mary A. Taylor, sister of Rice, to Harlow referring to the publication of this book and stating "Ruth's death has absolutely broken me." The author had committed suicide in September 1927. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: spine is sunned; upper joints are weak; pp. 6 and 7 have shadows from holding the telegram; otherwise, clean and tight.

Contemporary calf spine with six spine compartments between double gilt rules; red morocco label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Mansie Wauch. Marbled paper over boards. All page edges speckled. Remains of old paper label at head of spine and call number in white at tail. In ink on the title page in an old hand, following the title "By Mr Moir." At head of title page in another hand: "To the UPS from Hiester H. Muhlenberg of Reading Pa." Hiester H. Muhlenberg (1812-1886) graduated from Dickinson College in 1829 and practiced medicine in Reading; later he became a banker. A bookplate and inscriptions on the front fixed endpaper indicate that Muhlenberg gave the book to the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College in 1837.
